Screenwriting: How to Write An Effective Set Piece

When writing screenplays, beginning screenwriters often forget to add the element of the visually unforgettable to their stories. This element is called a Set Piece. To understand what a set piece is, think about Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest. Remember the scene with the sword fight on a big wheel while it was rolling...

Effects of the Writers Guild Strike

As I was browsing Helium I came across this topic about the WGA strike that is currently crippling the L.A. area. As I read through the topic area, I discovered an article and realized that many of the ideas put forth in it are pretty widespread non-industry thoughts regarding the strike.

If I may, I'd like to clear up so...

Why You Should Have Renter's Insurance

I confess. I used to be a serial non insurance having lump of humanity. I'm talking no health insurance, no renter's insurance and I'm still convinced credit card insurance is nothing but a big ole scam. I only had auto insurance because I was still on my Dad's policy not because California requires it...

Worst Family Reunion Ever!

I'm sure we've all had our share of bad family reunions. I thought I'd tell you about mine.

The day started innocently enough. And well, I might add. Earlier in the year, my mom had just been told she was in remission from the cancer that was trying to claim her life. Ecstatic that she finally...

Should Christians Play the Lottery

A while back, I was asked to give my thoughts on playing the lottery. Since I hadn't really given it much thought, I had to go to the scriptures to see what God says about it. This is what I found.

In Matthew Henry's commentary on 1 Samuel 14:36-46 he talks about how Saul and Jonathan went up against the Philistines. Jonathan...

Televangelists Under Fire: All Christians Feeling the Heat

I am disgusted! And more than a little sad. As I was leaving work two nights ago, I heard on the radio that Congress is looking into the finances of several large television ministries. Because I'd only heard a blurb, I went online to learn more about the investigation...

What's Your Passion?

Why Should You Bother To Find It?

Do not be deceived, God is not mocked; for whatever a man sows, that he will also reap. Galatians 6:7 NKJ

What are you sowing? Is it something that you're sure you want to reap? When you don't have a passion, it's far too easy to just sow any old thing. If you're...

Are You Blessed and Highly Favored?

Saint 1: "How are you?"
Saint 2: "Blessed and Highly Favored."

We're all familiar with the scenario.

This answer is so frequently used that it borders on cliché. There for a while I started to think something might be wrong with me if I didn't respond, "blessed and highly favored...

Speeding Ahead of God

How and Why Satan Torments People

God calls each of us to be watchful for the traps and snares Satan sets for us. In a world where there is so much going on all around and all the time, it's hard to distinguish when Satan is truly involved in the messes we find ourselves or if it's something of our own making. Just as a police detective solves a crime by...

Humor: Going to the Hospital

I can't believe the hospital just LIED to me!

Let me back this up a little bit. In November 2006, I was in a car accident. That's a story unto itself so I'll save that for another time. Right after, I thought I was okay. The next morning when I sat up in bed, my head dropped forward like it was just barely attached...

I'm Not A Mystery Shopper

It all began when I received a coupon in the mail for an oil change at a chain. Seeing that I'd save about $12 on that desperately needed maintenance, I happily decided to use it. Choosing the 2008 Presidential Candidate

I will admit it. I'm not a political fanatic by any stretch of the imagination. I'm one of those voters who files the election date in the back of her head and puts off the choice until closer to time to enter that little booth. When I say closer to time, I mean about a month or so out...

The Return of the Drive 55 Law

The other day, I ran across an article on the Wall Street Journal's Web site called, "The Insanity of Drive-55 Laws." I learned that Senator John Warner of Virginia has suggested a return to the federal 55-mph speed limit law that was initiated during the OPEC oil crisis in 1974. As someone who has recently learned firsthand that slowing down on the freeway does indeed save gas, I was ready to dismiss Mr. Stephen Moore's OpEd piece out of hand. However, I decided to keep an open mind and gave him a shot to convince me. And he did just that.

Fremantle Prison Escapes: Brenden Abbott

The Fremantle Prison has seen its share of bold criminals come through its doors. Its also seen quite a few sneak out. While John Boyle O'Reilly is the only prisoner to successfully stay out once he escaped, there are some other amusing attempts that are equally noteworthy. For instance, let's take a look at Brenden Abbott's attempt at freedom. Of all the escapees, this guy is my absolute favorite.

Fremantle Prison Escapes: John Boyle O'Reilly

The Fremantle Prison had its share of escapes during its 150 year history. The best one was done by John Boyle O'Reilly. This guy nearly caused a war between the U.S. and Great Britain with his little escapade. And he's the only prisoner they were never able to recapture.

Some were housed more temporarily than others. Among those others, there were a few intent on escaping.

Things That Will Get You Shot on a Los Angeles Freeway

Reflections on the Word Deuteronomy 28:8

Ever notice how we get caught up in the parts of Bible verses that we like and tend to gloss over the rest? For instance, I was just looking at Deuteronomy 28:8 KJVR which says,

"The LORD shall command the blessing upon thee in thy storehouses, and in all that thou settest thine hand unto; and he shall bless thee in the land which the LORD thy God giveth thee."

The Extent of Good Stewardship

I received a comment on my article, "Should Christians Play the Lottery?" that really got me thinking. The gist of the comment was that to be good stewards of God's gifts we should give up a lot of the conveniences we have in favor of feeding the hungry or other ministry activities. On the surface, I'm tempted to agree with the notion. But upon deeper reflection, I just can't support the concept. It's not Biblical.

Here's why.
